The artistic and sentimental progress of “African Style” takes place in the enchanting atmosphere, rich in history, of the elegant halls of Palazzo Salmatoris, from the quiet “Sala del Silenzio” to the austere “Sala della Pace”. Through the fusion of four nuclei, different but complementary, “African Style” intends to build an imaginary bridge between the great and forceful sculpture of black Africa and the contemporary African and western Art.

Masks, statues, fetishes, traditional objects, all sharing great expressive elegance and formal exactness, dialogue, according to the rhythm of emotional cadences, with the pictorial, sculptural and photographic work of contemporary artists. African Style is the comprehensive survey of the material and immaterial manifestations which define the African aesthetics, a way of being and living which expresses itself chiefly in sacred and profane sculpture, in bodily ornaments and adornments.

African Style is a dynamic system of social, aesthetic, functional and ritual values which has deeply affected the art and way of life of the western world. The avant-garde in the early twentieth century ,with Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Derain, Modigliani, Brancusi, Giacometti, was deeply inspired by the purity of the form and the plastic synthesis of African Art. The traditional African Art with its geometric conception of spaces and its expressiveness, brings forth the sublimation of artistic contents notwithstanding its magical and religious origins. African Art is life, outward expression of the sacred, creativeness, overthrowing, symbolic and hieratic depiction of reality.

In this exhibition, the great themes of traditional African Art are represented, with a well-balanced interpretation of both ethnographic and aesthetical outlook. In a wonderful kaleidoscope, floating between past and future, are displayed the works , inspired by African art, of Ugo Nespolo, Plinio Martelli, Titti Garelli, Renza Sciutto, Marian Heyerdahl, the photographs taken by Anna Alberghina, Tomas D.W. Friedmann, Phil Borges and the works of important contemporary African artists in a section run by Cesare Pippi. Historical contribute by Paolo Novaresio and critical contribute by Armando Audoli. “African Style” is an Art exhibition. Its aim is to be art and life, art and dream. Art and emotion.
